Chemicals & SAFETY

To ensure that our products comply with current chemical safety standards, we regularly test both materials and finished products. All suppliers are required to sign and follow our chemical guidelines and our Restricted Substances List (RSL), which is based on European legislation.

We are also part of a network led by RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), giving us access to the latest guidance and expertise in this field.

Phasing out PTFE and PFAS

We have phased out PTFE (a fluoropolymer containing PFAS) in almost all of our cookware and replaced it with ceramic non-stick coatings. One supplier has not yet been able to transition to ceramic coating.

All of our fuel hoses with steel braiding still have an internal PTFE liner, as it withstands fuel and high temperatures without degrading. Under normal use, the hose does not release PFAS into the environment.

Although our long-term goal is to completely phase out PFAS, we assess this use as environmentally safe. All hoses are manufactured in Europe. Some stove components also contain FKM rubber seals, for which we are investigating possible alternatives.

“The most important thing right now is to map, gain control, and identify solutions that work. In some areas, suitable alternatives are not yet available, but we are continuously working with suppliers to develop better materials.” – Staffan Till, Sustainability Manager, Primus

About PFAS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals often used for their water- and grease-repellent properties. They appear in many industrial and consumer applications, but are unfortunately very persistent in the environment.

Some PFAS have been linked to cancer, and emerging research indicates additional potential health effects. Due to these risks, PFAS are expected to become subject to stricter regulation in the near future.

Our measures to reduce PFAS

Non-stick coatings in Primus products are now PFAS-free.

We are driving change among our cookware suppliers, even though technical limitations currently prevent full phase-out.

PTFE is still used in hoses, and we are working to replace it with a PFAS-free alternative as soon as possible.

Towards lead-free valves

In addition to phasing out PFAS, we are also transitioning to lead-free brass in the valves of our Primus stoves. Lead has traditionally been used in brass to improve machinability and surface finish.

Collaboration and knowledge

We are members of the Chemicals Group, run by RISE. Membership provides:
- Access to monitoring and updates on legislation.
- Practical tools for chemical management.
- Networks and knowledge-sharing with other companies.
